Week 306: Cherry Canyon Park La Cañada Flintridge

June 16, 2024

AllTrails Forest Hill, Liz's, Owl, Alpha and Conservancy Loop, 2.1 miles.

Can't remember the last time Barbara and I hiked on a clear morning and today's blue skies above added a neat depth to the fun maze of trails in Cherry Canyon Park just south of Descanso Gardens. Cherry Canyon Park, owned by the city of La Cañada Flintridge, is just one of the hiking locations in the town that wove trails into its culture as it grew out of the late 19th century and that the American Hiking Society named "Trail Town USA" during the 1990s. Cherry Canyon's 130 acres in the San Rafael Hills aren't huge, but the canyon is filled with trails. Today was our fourth DIFFERENT hike through the park. We covered five trails in a short 2.1 miles, forcing us to keep our eyes open for turns appearing out of nowhere or multiple "which way?" decisions. So while the hike is fairly easy (except for that one little part where when had to descend, uh, sitting down), the real challenge was staying on course along switchbacks and through June bloom covered dirt paths. A fun maze of trails for hikers, bikers, and dogs taking their owners out for a walk. Entertaining!
