Week 25: Bronson Canyon Loop

November 08, 2015

Secret Stairs #33: Bronson Canyon Loop, 2.5 miles, 272 steps.

In the 1920s, Hollywood's film biz was the 5th largest industry in the United States. In the hills between the Hollywood sign far above, and Hollywood Boulevard far below, 100-yr. old mansions exemplified the growth of the silver screen's wealth. As we hiked steep streets past gated communities, hillside bungalows, and artistic contemporaries, the local joggers and dog-walkers we met were friendly and most knew of the Secret Stair hikes! Special thanks to the retired UCLA Med School professor who saved us from getting lost after a missed turn. She guided us back on track and gave us a mini-history lesson on the way. Pictured below: the first set of steps bordered by a garden adorned with blue glass bottles and urns; an example of the eclectic architecture stacked in the hills; and my favorite shot from the top—a sea of palm trees with the silhouette of downtown L.A.'s skyscrapers in the distance.
