Week 259: Bark Park Trail Calabasas
February 06, 2022AllTrails Bark Park Trail, 2.5 miles out-and-back.
The appeal of new hikes for Barbara and me is that we never really know what to expect despite the description or trail name...like Bark Park. We chose this hike as our intro to our unexplored web of trails in Los Virgenes View Park immediately south of the Los Virgenes exit of the 101. Named for the popular dog park at its base, you can't miss the entrance a mile down Los Virgenes the left. Good luck with parking: the fenced in dog park alone is popular and the trail above is a favorite for mountain bikers. We learned fast why the bikers like it—the narrow and rocky dirt trail zigzags up to the New Millennium Loop Trail for a longer ride/hike deeper into the Santa Monica Mountains. Some of the switchbacks are so tight that inexperienced bikers dismounted for safety. But the zigs and zags made for a fun hike on foot with a great over-the-shoulder look at the mountains, Conejo Valley, and the path behind us. Sweeping brown fields waiting for Spring line the sides of the well-maintained trail (thank you, CA Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority.) Without a leaf of shade anywhere, this hike is made for a cool winter day but climbing the steady rise in the heat could be brutal. We zigged. We zagged. We stepped aside for bikers zooming past. Stopped at the New Millennium Loop Trailhead at the crossroads for water, and by the time we retraced our steps back down, the trail was heavily populated with more hikers, bikers, and dogs. No rattlesnake sightings despite the warnings, but we did meet one curious pocket gopher who stared us down from a hole at the side of the trail. If you're a biker you'll love the challenge of this trail. If you're a hiker, you'll appreciate its simplicity. Lovely day, interesting hike.
