Week 95 - NoHo Arts District
August 06, 2017Walking LA #10, NoHo Arts District, 1.5 miles.
A quickie hike through a familiar neighborhood, or so I thought until Barbara and I hit the sidewalks for a closer look. In 1992 the L.A. Dept of Cultural Affairs established this section of North Hollywood as an arts district, and the opening of the Red Line Metro station on Lankershim at Chandler in 2000 turned a neighborhood going to seed into a popular urban village with new apartments and mixed-use developments. Fun sights include the Federal Bar in the old 1926 bank building on Lankershim across the street from the El Portal, once a vaudeville theater in the 20s. Funky restaurants, dance and fitness studios, and small theaters populate the area, but the "wow" factor of this hike was a stroll through the Hall of Fame Garden in the plaza of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences complex, where bronze busts and statues of TV legends from Ricky and Lucy, and Archie and Edith, to the creators of L.A. Law and the Big Bang Theory surround a statue of the Emmy award on top of a circular fountain. We ended the hike with mochas at Groundworks Coffee inside the refurbished, 1896 train depot on Chandler. Fun!
