Week 55 - Legg Lake & Whittier Narrows
August 14, 2016Secret Walks #22, Legg Lake & Whittier Narrows, 3 miles
L.A. native Barbara has a knack for geography, while I wander, face to the sky, mumbling, "Where the hell are we again?" Today our explorations took us twenty-five miles SE to the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area. A beautifully maintained 1500-acre park with softball & soccer fields, bike paths, play areas, and picnic tables; infamous for being the epicenter of the 5.9 earthquake that shook SoCal on Oct. 1, 1987. Nothing shaky about the peaceful, figure-eight hike we took around the park's three lakes. Our soundtrack: honking geese, shots from a nearby gun club, quacking ducks, cars on nearby Pomona Fwy., and the buzz of radio-controlled boats. The ducks had ownership of North Lake, the geese dominated Center Lake, and most wildlife avoided the radio-controlled boats speeding 80 mph across Legg Lake. Pictured below, the park, the ducks, the geese, and (under my thumb) Eldon with his handmade boat at the Legg Lake launch site.
